The Power of Advertising
Advertisements are powerful in that despite looking transparent, they are the complete opposite. Take this advertisement for GUESS.
At first glance, you might think it's simply selling watches. But look closely. Take the car, the backdrop, the number of watches, the different colors, the overall feeling being projected and place them all together. It's not selling watches, it's selling a lifestyle. This advertisement would not work if it were set in a classroom. Why? Because there's no need for shiny watches in a classroom. You need durable ones. These flashy watches in front of a serene backdrop implies that the wealthy wear this. What they're selling is that buying these watches means you are part of the upper class that can enjoy such luxuries.
Advertisements for perfumes are often most subjective, can you figure out why? Don't forget to bring in your advertisements for discussion next Saturday. Enjoy your break.
